I have just tonight located an obituary which brings us back one generation further in determining the French Canadian Ancestry of Actress Angelina Jolie.

This is the first breakthrough in years, as very little is online regarding her mother's family. Here is Angelina's maternal grandmother's 1973 obituary.

using this information I was able to piece the following together:

Marcheline Bertrand Voight (1st wife of Actor John Voight, parents of Angelina Jolie)
born 9 May 1950 Riverdale, Illinois
died 27 January 2007

daughter of:

Rolland F. Bertrand
born 11 June 1923
died 8 April 1985

and his wife

Lois June Gowens
born 14 February 1928 Cook County, Illinois
died 11 Nov 1973 Beverly Hills, California

This is where I am currently stuck, the Bertrand line certainly originates in Quebec, but unfortunately the 1930 US Census does not readily produce a candidate to be either of these two people.

If anyone out there has any ideas or possible leads, please post your finds here. This is the first time anywhere on the Internet the parents of Angelina's mother Marcheline are listed.

It appears now that Angelina Joli was named by her mother for her own grandmother Angelina/Angeline.

Rolland Bertrand (above) born 1923 died 1985 was most certainly the son of

George Bertrand born 1889 Illinois, son of French Canadian Immigrants
married
Angelina born 4 Dec 1895 Canada
died September 1981 Riverdale, Cook County, Illinois

Given his WWI Draft registration, George has now been identified as:

George Bertrand, born 9 April 1889 Goodrich, Kanakee Co., Illinois
died September 1962, Riverdale, Illinois.

son of Louis Bertrand & Delia Mayette.

Which ties her into a line already established here.

and here is the information on Angelina's immigrant Bertrand ancestor!!

James I had no idea you were doing Angelina's family history! Thats so cool since I think shes great. From time to time I get in the mood to do things like this for various actors or gangsters..

Well I was reading on a French Canadian Forum how everyone was stuck with her mother's line and decided to see what I could uncover, once back a few generations the line was established already by others on rootsweb. She is related to me almost a dozen times.

I posted a link to this forum on a couple genealogy queries, which got me at least 3 exited emails.

Did you know nearly ALL French Canadians are related? There were a couple dozen very early and very prolific immigrants to "New France" in the early 1600's and (with very very few exceptions) we all descend from at least a couple of them. In this way Alanis Morrissette, Madonna, Celine Dion, Mark Wahlberg and Angelina Jolie all have common ancestors.

Pretty kool no?
